The Zen Spirit in the Practice of the Japanese Sword (禅と日本刀) – Michel Coquet

The sword, between martial path and spiritual quest
In ancient Japan, the sword (刀 – Katana) was far more than a warrior’s weapon. Revered as a divine emblem and often linked to Buddhist deities, it embodied discipline, transcendence, and spiritual elevation. In the hands of a true practitioner, the sword became not only a tool of combat but also a path to self-realization.
In The Zen Spirit in the Practice of the Japanese Sword, Michel Coquet shares a unique testimony drawn from five years spent in Japan. Immersed in both martial practice and the study of traditional philosophies, he recounts his apprenticeship under Master Takeuchi, whose teachings aimed at achieving mushin (無心) – the state of no-mind, free from reflexive thought.
This work goes beyond martial study: it bridges the way of the sword with the search for inner truth, turning each cut into an act of awareness rather than simple technique.

Book Excerpt

“Iaido is a traditional Japanese martial discipline whose goal is to make the sword emerge from its scabbard in one pure motion. This solitary practice puts the swordsman face-to-face with himself, the blade being only the vector of his spontaneous intent.”

The Katana II (刀) – Gilles Bongrain

The Japanese sword: from artistry to the art of combat
Since medieval Japan, the katana (刀) has stood as more than just a weapon. A symbol of status, a sacred object, and a masterpiece of craftsmanship, it shaped both the history and spirit of the samurai. Yet beyond its cultural aura, the katana was above all a fearsome weapon of war, forged to dominate the battlefield.
In The Katana II, Gilles Bongrain continues the exploration he began with his first volume. While the initial book focused on the katana’s historical, technological, and artistic aspects, this second work delves into its martial use in combat, placing the sword back into the violent context of medieval Japan.
From samurai duels to military strategy, from codified gestures to martial schools, the book vividly reveals the katana’s real-life application and its evolution until the fall of the warrior class in 1868. It also shows how, far from disappearing, the spirit of the sword continues today through the disciplines of iaidō (居合道), kendō (剣道), and battōdō (抜刀道), practiced in dojos worldwide.

Why add this book to your cart?

An essential reference: the long-awaited continuation of the first volume on the katana.
Focused on real combat: understand the katana not only as art but as a martial weapon.
Richly illustrated: 223 pages with detailed visuals that bring each chapter to life.
Comprehensive insight: history, techniques, and context combined in one volume.
Adding this book to your cart is more than just a purchase—it’s an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the most iconic sword in Japanese history.

"The Famous Story of the Glorious Years of the Samurai," adapted into our language and romanticized by George Soulié de Morant, The 47 Ronin is undoubtedly one of the most touching and meaningful tales ever published about these fierce warriors.

The adventures of the 47 Ronin, known in Japanese as Chushingura ("The Treasury of Loyal Samurai"), are not a legend but a real-life event that caused a sensation in the early 18th century and was later embellished by popular imagination. At the time, it was strictly forbidden to draw one’s sword within the royal palace grounds. However, Asano Takumi, a young warrior as brave as he was uncompromising, broke this rule in response to the provocations of the head of ceremonial rites, Kira. He was sentenced to death, but his vassals 47 samurai now masterless swore to avenge his honor.

For more than a year, the conspiracy remained secret. The ronin endured scorn and disgrace to lull Kira into a false sense of security. Their determination paid off: they exacted their revenge but were subsequently condemned to death themselves.

This book will captivate anyone interested in the warrior spirit of the samurai and the history of the Far East.

"History has credited the Ninja warrior with incredible prowess and efficiency, making them a feared combatant during Japan's Middle Ages.

Long shrouded in secrecy, yet foundational to many traditional Japanese martial arts techniques, ninjutsu emerges as both an unparalleled survival skill and a true philosophy of life. Following the Way of Ninpo also means being in harmony with the laws of the Universe, learning to abide by its rules, blending with the elements, and feeling as a part of nature, which must be disturbed as little as possible. It is about discovering that the 'self' is part of the 'Greater Whole,' and that 'being differently' opens new horizons. This perspective has always been the essence of the purist teachings of ninjutsu.

This book is the result of research that began in 1986 and culminated in a practical guide that can be considered a classic in the art of the shadow warriors."

Our memory of the history of Japan is short.
It dates back, for the most part, to the twentieth century.
However, there is much more to discover. This large illustrated album will allow you to better understand the history of this fascinating country.
By highlighting the nine most decisive centuries of its history, from the 12th to the end of the 20th century, it traces in images how the Empire, weakened, found the resources necessary to rise from its ashes and become a world power. leading.

Military leaders, rulers, artists, thinkers ... the names of key figures in Japan are unknown to us. The same goes for the significant events in the history of the archipelago. Hiroshima, Nagasaki, yes, but still? Who knows the battle of Seki gahara, which sealed the fate of the country in 1600, as Waterloo determined that of Europe a little over two centuries later? Our memory of the history of Japan is short. It dates back, for the most part, to the twentieth century. And yet!
Reading this great album on the history of Japan gives us a lesson: the fragility of empires, and the resources they find to be reborn. Japan, whose civil and military power extended over almost all of Southeast Asia in 1941, found itself wiped out four years later, in 1945. But he got up. In just over two decades, from 1945 to 1968, it became the world's second largest economic power.

Through three schools of Japanese swordsmanship (Tenshin Shôden Katori Shintô, Maniwa Nen, and Higo Ko), the study of three specifically Japanese weapons (naginata, chigiriki, and kusarigama), and three traditional themes (female warriors, the tradition of Arakiryû, and the blood oath), the author provides an intimate perspective on traditional Japanese martial arts.

Sekigahara - The greatest samurai battle

This book written by Julien Peltier traces the story of one of the most fascinating characters of Japan Tokugawa leyasu who led a major issue with the battle of Sekigahara.

This battle is the biggest battle in the history of the samurai where nearly 170,000 fighters are torn to pieces.

PRESENTATION:
In the fall of 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of the most fascinating figures in Japanese history, emerged victorious in the greatest samurai battle ever fought. The stakes are high since it is nothing less than the entire empire, finally pacified. The overlord of House Tokugawa will be the third of the Unifiers of the land. Before managing to reap the dividends of peace, it was however necessary to risk everything one last time on the green carpet of the rice fields of Sekigahara, a thin valley located in the heart of the archipelago. The supreme quarrel emptied on the morning of October 21, 1600, bringing together the best captains and the most valiant champions of their time. A test of gigantism, nearly 170,000 fighters were cut to pieces, leaving 30,000 of them on the sidelines. It was not until the Napoleonic epic, two centuries later, to see similar numbers rise in our latitudes. At the crossroads of two opposing centuries, Sekigahara also sounds the swan song that the warriors of yesteryear sing in spite of themselves. At the end of the battle, the days of warlords, samurai and citadels are over.
