The Katana 2

Here is the continuation of the book "The katana", in the continuity of the previous one that comes to complete it by approaching the subject of the katana in its use notably in combat, always with magnificent illustrations.

"Few bladed weapons have developed a reputation for efficiency, but also a mystical aura equivalent to that of the katana.
An object of art, high technology or even a quasi-religious symbol, it also represents one of the most formidable combat instruments in history, both in terms of its design, its qualities, but also the highly evolved fencing that has taken place there. attached for many centuries.

The first book devoted to the katana, published in 2003, aimed to present this Japanese sword from a historical, technological and artistic point of view, for lack of space, the question of combat was only barely mentioned at the time.

This new work, while being a continuation of the previous one, aims to address the question of the use of the katana as a combat weapon, by placing it in the bellicose context of medieval Japan which saw it born and evolve. This long period lasted until 1868, date of the Meiji revolution, which put an end to the samurai class and consequently to the `` private '' use of the katana, the military use, as an officer's sword. , remaining however appropriate until the capitulation of imperial Japan in 1945. Subsequently, in modern Japan and even well beyond (proof is, the innumerable dojos present throughout the world), this weapon took again a new life through the three martial arts of the saber: the art of drawing (iaïdo), fighting (kendo) and slicing (battodo).

In order to complete the objective of this book, the elements making it possible to better understand the katana in its purely martial use are presented successively: the realistic study of it in combat, in all the circumstances of the time of the samurai, finally , the last part describes the context of medieval Japan, a very important element in the understanding of this weapon through its historical environment.
